Peabody Retirement Community is pleased to offer a special Parkinson’s wellness program for individuals with Parkinson’s disease. Our Rock Steady Boxing program can help reverse, reduce, and even delay the symptoms of Parkinson’s, allowing you to enjoy a healthier, more active lifestyle.
Parkinson’s is a degenerative disease that causes physical muscle loss in many of the same areas boxing can help strengthen. In Rock Steady Boxing, you won’t be facing off against another person—you’ll be facing off against the disease itself. The goal is to combat Parkinson’s symptoms with exercise, address postural imbalances, improve flexibility, and build your overall fitness levels.
The goals of this unique treatment for Parkinson’s disease include:
Rock Steady Boxing is open to both men and women of all ages with Parkinson’s disease, no prior boxing experience necessary! Sessions are led by our Wellness Director certified in Rock Steady Boxing on-site at Peabody’s Billie Jane Strauss Wellness Center, and workouts include focus mitts, heavy bags, speed bags, double-ended bags, jump rope, core work, calisthenics and circuit weight training. We are dedicated to helping participants improve speed, strength, balance and flexibility.
Some of the specific benefits of the program include increased range of motion, better flexibility, posture and gait, and an improved quality of life. Recent studies by the Cleveland Clinic and others suggest that this intense “forced” exercise can even slow down the progression of the disease.
