North Manchester, IN–With a long successful career in real estate, you could safely say Mary Heminger appreciates the benefits of a good referral. So following her 12-day successful stay in the Rehab to Home program at Peabody Retirement Community last September, she couldn’t resist returning the favor.
“I’m always delighted when a happy homeowner passes along my name to someone who needs a good listing agent,” says Heminger, “So, when others do a great job for me, I’m more than happy to make a recommendation.”
In this case, the referral goes to Peabody’s Rehab to Home program. Heminger explains,
“My orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Hartzell, actually recommended the program to me. He knew I’d need therapy following my double knee replacement surgery and thought I’d like Peabody because it’s
not like a nursing home.”
Mary has a friend who lives at Peabody, so when asked, her pal volunteered to show her around. Heminger explains, “It’s a wonderful atmosphere. Some communities can be so depressing. But not Peabody. I toured the community in advance, and I was impressed with the layout…the décor…the spacious rooms. So I preregistered prior to surgery.”
When Mary was released from the hospital on September 6, three days following surgery, Peabody picked her up and transported her to a private suite in their Rehab to Home program.
“My daughter and her family were as impressed with the accommodations as I was. There were four or five large windows in the room, so it was bright and cheerful—and the bathroom was huge.” The proud grandmother continues, “Although my grandson didn’t understand why we weren’t at my house, even he liked the place.”
During Mary’s 12 days as an inpatient in Peabody’s Rehab to home program, she was put through her paces by the therapy team twice a day to build strength, balance, and flexibility in both knees—and to regain confidence on her feet. She also made more than a few friends in the process.
“The staff was so kind and accommodating at Peabody—from the nurses and nursing assistants to the dining room wait staff,” says Mary. “And I can honestly say I made friends there, too—with fellow patients over lunch and dinner.” Although Mary has been released from inpatient care, she returns twice-a-week for outpatient therapy and tries to arrange appointments around mealtime so she can swing by and catch up with any newfound friends still there.
Just four weeks post-surgery, Heminger is already back at work listing and selling homes. She’s also looking forward to her follow-up visit with her orthopedic surgeon at the end of October. “I’m sure Dr. Hartzell is going to be impressed with my recovery. And I’m going to have to thank him for his recommendation. My stay at Peabody definitely helped me get back on my feet—and I can’t say enough about how pleasant they made my stay.”
When asked if she would recommend Peabody to friends and family for rehab care, Mary didn’t hesitate one bit. “I already have. I’m sold on Peabody.”
Coming from someone who’s made a successful career of listing and selling homes, that’s a pretty big compliment for the Rehab to Home program at Peabody Retirement community.
